There are no magnetic monopoles (yet) but there are quasi magnetic monopoles...

Because there aren't any magnetic monopoles, I believe in ordinary circumstances the relationship is inverse cube of distance.

In fact they too have only discovered analogues of monopoles and the abstract is confusing for non-specialists, as evidenced by this thread.

As a bar magnet gets longer it behaves more and more like 2 monopoles separated by the bar.

Wait, haven't they proven that you can make magnetic monopoles and that wormholes are still a possibility?

As others have pointed out, these are indeed just analogues of (fundamental) monopoles.

Infact there is a proof of why electrons have quantized charge (by Dirac), but it requires that magnetic monopoles exist, which haven't been observed.

But doesn't this on its own rule out magnetic monopoles?

If I understand correctly, they're unusual crystal structures that approximate the behavior of a monopole in some ways, but they aren't true monopoles.

In looking at spin ice, I'm struck by the similarity between the "trail" or "string" between monopoles and the way long bar magnets behave.

Now, when it comes to results like this, they are interesting because it doesnt really matter if there are magnetic monopoles if you "just wanted to use a magnetic monopole" - you could create some in supfl.

In these spin ice materials the magnetic moments of the rare earth atoms in the crystal are "geometrically frustrated" and cannot become all aligned or anti-aligned as in a normal magnetic material - so they apparently arrange themselves into strings, and the ends of the strings look like monopoles.
