The chassis was of one piece, a "monocoque.

Not sure what you mean, but aircraft stopped being "chassis and body" some time in the 1930's. That was the switch to a monocoque design with stressed skin.

But to make a monocoque out of something like carbon fibre you need a lot of money!

You should look up the monocoque F1-cars use. They basically are a carbon case just around the driver which is designed to hodl of ridiculous forces from just about any direction.

The car bodies must fit production sedan templates, so the the chassis is welded tubular steel instead of carbon monocoque like on F1 or Indycar.

A standardised, cheaply manufactured carbon monocoque around which you can have a cottage industry of bits for customization and extension.
