A great documentary miniseries about this topic is War: A Commentary by Gwynne Dyer.

I would say that the overall experience of Mass Effect would drastically change were it to become a TV miniseries.

Hyperion by Dan Simmons would make an /amazing/ miniseries.

Snow Crash was originally meant to be a graphic novel--with some clever screenwriting, it could easily be stretched out to 12-13 episodes (or at least a miniseries).

You have a few superhero stories exploring these themes (eg, The Authority or the old Squadron Supreme miniseries from the 80s), but yes, most superheroes seem to lack ambition and imagination.

I really disliked the that Dune miniseries[1].

The BBC Oppenheimer miniseries is probably the best I've watched on it, though it's not just about the atomic bomb in WW2.

Another TV adaptation worth mentioning is SyFy's miniseries "Frank Herbert's Dune" and "Frank Herbert's Children of Dune".

The Sci-Fi (before it was "SyFy") miniseries of the book is good if you've already read the book and you view it as a filmed theatrical production rather than a "movie".

There's a lot wrong with the Torchwood "Miracle Day" miniseries, but it's worth watching the first five episodes to see one writer's interpretation of how we would handle it.

I recommend "Helmet For My Pillow" by Robert Leckie, which was also one of the books used as a basis for the HBO miniseries "The Pacific".
