Arguably shock wave lithotripsy, a common method for breaking up kidney stones, could be described as focused ultrasound.

Shock or burst wave lithotripsy is not new either, but it is being improved all the time.

This kind of treatment is called lithotripsy and it is used already since the 80's.

Like, there is a new lithotripsy wand that breaks up kidney stones with ultrasound.

They would prefer to bill you instead for an expensive lithotripsy procedure which also gives you a lot of radiation via fluoroscopy.

As a recurring kidney stone sufferer I am very thankful for fentanyl for my lithotripsy procedures.

So the idea here seems to be an extension of high energy ultrasound methods developed for lithotripsy (breaking up kidney stones) to disrupt tumor beds.

Well, isn't it called 'lithotripsy' and exists for quite a time?

It also probably has the same caveat that shock wave lithotripsy does too, where if the stone travels below the pelvis, the procedure can’t be used.

They would rather you suffer and schedule an expensive lithotripsy w/ fluoroscopy radiation procedure that they can bill you for when a ten cent pill does the job.

I think parent is thinking of "Ultrasonic lithotripsy" which does use ultrasound.

“Lithotripsy” is the name of the kidney stone treatment.

The "game-changer" is the introduction of burst wave lithotripsy, which apparently is less painful and thus possible to go through without general anaesthisia, which, don’t get me wrong, is definitely an improvement.

This is "burst wave lithotripsy," compared to the somewhat-similar existing "shock wave lithotripsy." The new iteration apparently works more quickly and causes less pain, so can be performed while the patient is awake rather than requiring general anesthesia, which would make it practical to do it in, say, an ER or regular doctor's office.

Lithotripsy is pretty limited, I think the preference in most cases is to use ureteroscopy (using holmium laser ablation to break up stones)..

Lithotripsy can cause acute tissue damage and long-term loss of kidney function.[1] The shock waves need to be carefully targeted at the stone and for the correct amount of time to reduce the risk of this, typically with X-ray or ultrasound.
