ISPs are using Alcatel and Juniper still sure, big enterprise shops are still swearing by Cisco.

I remember rumors about a year ago of them acquiring Juniper Networks, but I guess the price wasn't right?

Best of both worlds means parsed out normalisation so I don't have to remember that Juniper calls source ip srcIP and Cisco SourceIP, but the original logs under the covers for grepping if you need.

Cisco have always been in the back haul, core mobile routing space, along with Juniper, and some others smaller players.

Cisco is more worried about Juniper, Brocade, Arris, etc.

Not everyone uses Cisco, some people use Juniper.

Traditionally, Network Engineers are experienced with Vendor provided solutions (Juniper, Cisco, etc) and most interviews would cover experience implementing/supporting different types of architecture using these Vendor provided solutions.

I guess that's why people are leaving for Juniper.

I haven't heard anything interesting from 3Com in years; the switching market is dominated by Cisco/Juniper/ProCurve/Brocade/Extreme and even smaller newcomers like Force10 seem to get more attention than 3Com.

I'd argue that traditional gear gets in the way a lot more than most people know / would think, but because you can pull any John Q Public off the street to support a Cisco or Juniper environment, "no one was ever fired for buying IBM" applies.
