Because Joyent maintains a single codebase across its own service offerings and the cloud infrastructure framework software that it sells, customers can more easily consume Joyent technology in a hybrid fashion.

It is also worth mentioning that since Joyent has implemented their own docker client, not all features are there yet.

It's been container-native for, like, ten years and Joyent just recently added support for running Docker containers on bare metal.

Also, take a look at what Joyent are doing with Triton.

That would suck for Joyent though, so I shouldn't really wish for it.

I'm using Joyent in my new ventures without hesitation.

I've been watching Joyent with interest for a while now, but I don't think I or my employer will be using their public cloud any time soon.

Although Joyent can take advantage of the growing Docker ecosystem, it must find ways to bring that ecosystem to its platform, and that ecosystem will not by itself be sufficient to support customer needs.

It is also good to see Joyent writing Node documentation, I hope they can centralize the Node ecosystem and avoid fragmentation while take benefit of an open develop with IO.js fork.

I think it's too easy these days to overcomplicate a stack with AWS and/or Docker, and Joyent has picked the right pain points to streamline.

JS will always be in demand for front end web positions (the MVC front end frameworks included), but as for the backend I have doubts about it's longevity, a major flag being the IO & Joyent split, as well as general back end developer anathema to using JavaScript I've sensed over the years (your's being an example).

Joyent did that for SmartOS with their "Triton" project, which lets you run Docker containers on their (SmartOS) cloud.

Referring to Node.js pronoun drama which led to one key developer being virtually "fired" by Joyent and forced out of a project.

On the particular point of "worry about Joyent as a company", Gartner adds: Joyent needs an ecosystem of third-party tools that support its platform, along with a software marketplace, and managed and professional service partners.

Now, to be fair, we're by no means AWS-sized and we're not trying to be everything to all people -- which Gartner also points out, under "Cautions": Joyent focuses on developing its own technology, and has a track record of releasing innovative capabilities.

Joyent has a capable basic cloud IaaS offering, but its feature set is strongly oriented toward cloud-native use cases, and it is highly developer-centric.

If anyone wants to earn some huge brownie points with me (and who wouldn't), you could implement a PaaS on top of Joyent's Triton system[1].
