jaywalker

This is in reference to a jaywalker. My point is both cars should have stopped when they saw a jaywalker crossing the street.

A jaywalker doesn't know your phone number, where you live, and where your wife works. Hopefully the scammer doesn't either, but hopefully this still conveys the point.

I don't care whether you're a jaywalker or Hitler. Stealing pizza should not be handed a 25-year sentence, regardless if it was from a group of children or not.

Now the internet is the city, and these cops are arresting every jaywalker and litterer they can find. Somehow, I doubt it will turn out well in the long run...

To cross safely you have to slow down to walking pace and be hyper-vigilant like a jaywalker. The safest place in an intersection is as close to the centre as you can get, where you are visible to everybody.

It's same way that calling both a jaywalker and a burglar criminals just because both have committed acts against the law dilutes the word "criminal."

Is a car manufacturer liable when a driver runs over a jaywalker because they were texting on their phone? No. Is the phone manufacturer liable?

Also, it's not true that the vehicle automatically bears no responsibility if they strike a jaywalker.

Drivers are always at fault for any damage caused by their car, regardless of if the jaywalker disregarded the lights. Also, cars are required by law to let walking people have right of way if they encounter any crossing not guarded by lights.

I'm a relentless jaywalker, sometimes unconsciously, and my career has only been in tech startups. Coincidence?

It is quite possible that the driver, at the speed they're driving at, does not have the reflexes or braking distance to safely stop when encountering a "jaywalker". The alternative that many people propose is to reduce driving speed to "safe" values, which I always thought naive.

The difference between a regular jaywalker and someone who is mentally disturbed is the mentally disturbed jaywalker is unpredictable and you have no idea what they'll do next. The right decision in this case was for both cars to at least slow down if not stop in front of the crosswalk.

Big companies are next to invulnerable when you treat them using the same playbook as you would a jaywalker or a person the runs a red light. They love their court cases because they have lawyers on retention and it helps them build an even stronger moat: the moat made up out of negligible legal costs at scale that would criple smaller players.

If cars had to stop like that to give extra space for a jaywalker that had exited the path of travel, someone would rear end the AV, or at the very least the driving experience would be very jarring. If we wanted to legitimize this case then probably large areas of downtown in cities should be redefined to be free-for-all traffic with low speed limits.
