Those are my favourite two Ursula Le Guin novels too:) Very well thought-through effects of technology on culture.

Her father had this copy of the Tao Te Ching, something Le Guin later rendered in English.

But I don't recall seeing much by Le Guin in any bookstore, new or used, small or large.

Or Le Guin -- she seems to think she knows what's good.

I was especially disappointed when Ursula Le Guin trusted her Earthsea series to him, and he gave it to his idiot son.

I do agree that he might not be sci-fi writer with the best technique - Bester or Le Guin might be better there.

Both Le Guin and Ballard are absolutely worth it!

At any rate, I would say: Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Heinlein The Dispossessed, Le Guin The Stars My Destination, Bester Childhood's End, Clarke Stand out as some of my favorites.

Also your stereotypical Yorkshire would shorten "the" to "t'" (going down t'pit) - we would drop it completely "guin' dahn pit".

Your story idea reminds me of Le Guin's Earthsea trilogy, one of my all-time favorite fantasy works.
