Anyone using gpgme will trigger the pinentry program, which you can make recognisable if you need a trusted UI.

Good to know thought that gpgme is actively endorsed now, because at that point of time it didn't look like it.

Does that kinda imply that gpgagent would be usable as a building block for programmable access to gpg, ie next-gen gpgme?

It's a wrapper around gpgme, which in turn is a wrapper around gnupg.

But gpgme ends up calling the binary itself in many cases!

However, for some areas of application gpgme could do the trick.

I wonder how feasible it would be to add a plugin to the Evernote application to tie in with GnuPG through gpgme.

A saner approach would be to build upon gpgme.

This kind of mirrors my experience, I was writing a gpg keyserver in PHP at the time when 5.2 was current and was using an extension[1] that wrapped gpgme.

As the OP mentions iphone support in the first two sentences, so, it is a bit disingenuous to suggest that gpgme (which simply wraps the gpg executable) is a solution and that "sheer ignorance" and "lack of will" are the only reasons anyone would suggest this was an interesting article.
