I'm not sure if the author has noticed it or not, but there is a such thing as globalization and the global needs for goods and services will increase as developing countries close the ground with developed nations. This global recession is just another business cycle, eventually the world will have another upswing, and then we will revert to mean again.

And that's not even touching on globalization, which seems inevitable, and which has had a major effect on the disappearance of working-class and middle-class jobs. The article touches on the effects of new technologies, access to them, and ability to master them -- but this seems pretty meritocratic unless access is restricted to the children of privileged families.

A second answer might be that we're only now fully realizing the effects of globalization -- outsourcing, moving factories to China, call centers to India, etc... due to the advances in telecommunications and whatnot.

In addition, a perfect storm of automation, globalization and erosion of worker rights has severely reduced the bargaining position of employees worldwide. Furthermore, by keeping the majority of the population fully occupied at all times, participation in the democratic process becomes an incredible burden.

Unfortunately, advances in technology and globalization of the marketplace make it increasingly difficult for someone who desires that product to wait for these arbitrary deadlines and legally obtain it, especially when convenient, simple options to get it immediately exist. While it may not be the most profitable solution for a content creator to focus on legally making their content as available as possible, it would seem it is definitely the best way to combat piracy as many users would consume the content "as intended" if only the option was available to them and affordable.
