I guess I just assumed that people knew about galvanic cells... Okay, I'm sorry, let me backtrack.

It's done that way to reduce galvanic corrosion. The system has been in place since the original Bell system was based on 12v batteries.

Could also be measuring the galvanic skin response and the like to try to further narrow it down. But I don't know how well that works for reliability since stress can change it i think.

For most of the people it's sufficent description to understand the product and using the "galvanic" term wouldn't help to understand it better. However it would be nice if they had a "how does it work?"
