There is a lot of classified work on GaAs for communication links where the speed of demodulating/modulating a signal is critical.

They've attracted nine-figure investments and posted really spectacular efficiency of ~28% in GaAs thin films.

They're tinkering with the form factor to figure out the best way to focus more light on small bits of GaAs.

Funnily enough, most of the GaN and GaAs devices in general use are LEDs!
