Sounds like a review of the book of Ecclesiastes -- Solomon tried power, fame, pleasure, money, all of it...vanity...meaningless.

But Christians believe (and Ecclesiastes ultimately concludes) that true meaning is judged on a timescale greater than we're used to considering.

That is halfway to Orwell's conversion of Ecclesiastes to bureaucratic English.

I also rather like Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon is basically porn!

So the Byrds were covering a Pete Seeger song, who used lyrics by Ecclesiastes.

Considering that America was overwhelmingly Christian and that many of the maxims borrow ideas from Ecclesiastes, Proverbs, and Psalms, it isn't surprising.

"Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body." (Ecclesiastes 12:12b).

But I think it's significant that he does not loose hope altogether: "There is nothing better for a man [than] that he should eat and drink, and make his soul enjoy good in his labor." So the philosophy of Ecclesiastes is almost hedonistic (and views god more as blind fate than a benevolent force or being).

It's Ecclesiastes, in the old testament of the Bible, and begins with "Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity." I'm quite an atheist, not religious, and generally not given to quoting scripture.
