We have a weird language ('eaux' is 'o', imagine that?) but this is not one of the crazy things.

Bordeaux should be pronounced like eaux so that part is correct:) I just mean that Bordo would be the same, it's all closed o sounds.

Said speaker would also contend that the four-letter eaux is overkill for what could be satisfactorily replaced with just a single 'o'.

I wouldn't mind some spelling simplifications around all those eau/eaux/oeu/oeux type word endings.

Many modern behemoths such as Veolia, Transdev, Vivendi, Vinci trace their origins to such companies (sometimes the same - Compagnie générale des eaux was massive at some point).

Or maybe the problem was that the wikidata ID for the Dutch article was already linked to something else (so O points to wikidata ID 123 and Eaux points to wikidata ID 321).

On the other hand, the high classes in the 19th century often spoke French and Italian, which is why it used to be fashionable to have some pluralizations such as -eau/eaux (bureau/bureaux) and -o/i (virtuoso/virtuosi).

Nowadays it isn't as easy as just filling in that O is the Dutch article about what is called Eaux in French, you need to visit another Wikimedia project called wikidata and enter a translation there.

Fortunately we still have the word for waters which is eaux and that we pronounce "o"

Here's a simple example, both "eaux" (waters) and "oh" sound the exact same.

Now try saying "de-eauxr-s" and "mout-eaux-n" (with a silent s and n).

Well, "o" and "eaux" are not pronounced the same in French.

I'll accept the correction regarding Saint-Laurent-des-Eaux, thank you.

(Yes, Saint-Laurent-des-Eaux faced two indendant meltdown events…).

But if the target name, O, is already in use, you need to first find a new data object name for O and migrate the wikidata object to the new name and then create a new one for the translation of Eaux.
