It is 22GB compressed (250GB uncompressed) while Wikidata is 5GB compressed (49GB uncompressed) [1].

They use WikiData now to fulfil the same basic function as Freebase, so it does seem that they require some human assistance.

Amusingly, Birthdays is the first example given in the wikipedia article about wikidata.

Said that, I believe the process described in the blog post is not loading the whole Wikidata dump into memory and it would work the same to process Freebase or even larger data dumps with your laptop.

Shutting down Freebase was a big hit for many projects in the AI space, Freebase had 2,903,361,537 facts in comparision Wikimedia's Wikidata has just 13,924,224 facts - that's still a huge difference.
