My guess is the docroot is set to /var/www/html with CakePHP server configuration.

CakePHP trying to emulate Rails while supporting PHP was an idea destined to fail especially when trying to support PHP 4.x.

Frameworks like CakePHP, Laravel and Symphony have shown that PHP is capable of competing with Django with Python and Rails with Ruby.

My recommendation is to find and work through a couple sample applications in CakePHP.

CakePHP, Codeigniter, and Laravel are all PHP frameworks, so not sure what you mean by "downgrade" your knowledge of mySQL and PHP.
