Lastly remember "elective surgery" sounds a lot like "non-essential work" but basically any pre-scheduled surgery is elective: organ transplants, hip replacements, arthroscopic labral repair (I'm waiting on that one currently), etc.

I had a surgery last January, broken labrum on both hips, left was "ok" and the right was really damaged, still it was an arthroscopic surgery and I could go on with my life 2 weeks after, but...

So being able to "write code" is no more or less important than being able to "do accounting", or being able to "operate a forklift", or being able to "perform arthroscopic surgery".

Arthroscopic surgery has advanced significantly in the last 30 years.
