The Wehrmacht had been one of the most effective fighting forces the world has ever known.

The German Wehrmacht had just been defeated by the Soviet Army three months earlier.

Organisation Gehlen started as a German CIA unit with former Wehrmacht and SS officers.

But then the Wehrmacht would often soon be followed by the SS who would of course be far less friendly to the civilians.

The Wehrmacht was very high-tech compared to the Red Army in the 1940s, but the Soviets (as did the Americans on the Western Front) threw quantity rather than quality at the Wehrmacht, and destroyed it.

In 42-43 some were reintegrated forcefully, and those I agree do not bear responsibility for the Wehrmacht war crimes.

Not the majority though, else the wehrmacht would have done less war crimes.

There were plenty of Wehrmacht soldiers with brown skin, wearing turbans, or carrying copies of the Quran given to them by Hitler as gifts.

They wanted to present the image that the Wehrmacht was mechanized.

Meanwhile the mighty Wehrmacht was still mostly horse-drawn.

My grandmother had a lot of stories about the Wehrmacht and was very disappointed that they were basically whitewashed from their pedophilic rapes, public executions and other group punishment.

There were good Wehrmacht soldiers, too.

:) Plus, joining Waffen SS wasn't just about "killing" - this could be said about Wehrmacht.

Read it first hand from Bloch's "Strange Defeat", describing just what it was like to face the new, fresh, efficient Wehrmacht when you are led by the last war's winners.

The thing with the German army ("Wehrmacht") is that for decades Germans told themselves that sure, SA/SS were evil and did horrible things, but the Wehrmacht was "clean", so granddaddy never did anything wrong, he was only defending his country.

On the other hand, there were thousands upon thousands of Germans who participated in and/or witnessed the implementation of the "Final Solution" either as members of the SS, the Einsatzgruppen, death camp or concentration camp guards, police in occupied Europe, or with the Wehrmacht.

There were people of Jewish descent that served in Wehrmacht, including in pretty high positions[1].

So basically you think that if the French populace had a lot of guns it would help them fight off Wehrmacht?

TL;DR The city must completely disappear from the surface of the earth and serve only as a transport station for the Wehrmacht.
