To be fair I thought days of Vang Vieng glory are gone with end of tubing or is it back?

Vang Vieng in Laos was the cheapest place I lived.

But I agree Vang Vieng was for me tourist hell, though if you get on motorbike and just ride along those karst mountains through villages and unpaved roads it was much better, the problem was the village itself mostly and tubing, I despise much more Luang Prabang full of retired package tourists everywhere you moved, that was truly much more disgusting than VV.

Found ringing rocks at the top of jagged limestone mountains in Vang Vieng, Laos a few months ago.

I lived in Laos for a few months a decade ago, just outside of Vang Vieng.

I went to Vang Vieng, did the tubing, left the food area half a hour before the cops rolled ~80 euros for $200usd.

Everybody says they want to see the unspoiled remote village, but they actually go to Vang Vieng.

I tried it again, explicitly asking for a trip of at least 5 cities north of Luang Prabang and it included southern cities like Pakse, Savannakhet, and Vang Vieng.
