Napa and Sonoma don't seem to mind the alcohol tourism.

I call it outrage tourism. Most of the time, people commenting like this are simply trying on other people's purported outrage to see how it feels.

I don't like the type of tourism where you rush to one tourist destination, take a photo of said landmark, and then rush to the next. All the while you are surrounded by people who are the same as you.

Hats off to Virgin Galactic just for using the phrase "sub-orbital commercial space tourism." It reads like science fiction.

There are more complicated answers, but they strike me as a perverse sort of poverty tourism. You have such astoundingly better options than poor people.

Beaches are expensive, if you have a multimillion dollar tourism industry it makes sense to spend millions dredging sand, cleaning, and sanitizing. Guys like Khosla will want their private beach and want the state to fix it for them as well.

Has anyone done a study of how much this is damaging the tourism industry in the USA? I have 1001 places I want to go, but all those in the USA shifted down a lot lower on the list after they started a lot of the airport security/TSA measures.

Medical tourism, clinical trials, etc, etc. The billionaire can buy a fleet of doctors but he cannot buy a form of medical technology that isn't yet available to other people.

I have similar thoughts about 'mourning tourism' and the questionable relationships people have in their heads with public figures, but we humans are irrational creatures. Tolerating our irrationality is a good policy.

From that prototype, Virgin Galactic is developing a craft for commercial, space-tourism use--SpaceShipTwo. This flight test demonstrates that the first SpaceShipTwo is airworthy and has engine function. The plan is that after more flight testing, that vehicle will actually carry paying passengers.

That will likely translate into far more people beingable to go into orbit and the development of a sustained orbital tourism industry on an impressive scale which will fuel further innovation and drive down cost of access to space even more. Finally, all of this is being done by a private company working toward its own ends rather than a company on a strict government contract.

This isn't so when you talk about Greece and the EU. Also, as any developed economy, Greece has a large economic capacity - it has advanced industry, technology, tourism, education, etc. In short, it has a lot of assets, so lending money to it would be more like lending money to my gambling friend who just happens to be an immortal Stu Ungar - yes, he's wildly dysfunctional, but the potential ROI is almost always worth it.

Org/sens-research/research-themes So given this ridiculous state of affairs, pretty much par for the course for big government, therapies for aging will never happen in the US for so long as the present regulatory structure exists, and for so long as there is no massive medical tourism and global research and development exchange devoted to circumventing it. That latter community is only just getting started, when considered in the grand scheme of things.

Another issue will likely be tourism as it is largely tied to its environment. As the everglades experiences rapid salt water intrusion, the reefs continue to be bleached due acidification, and mangroves migrate inland slower than sea level, the productive estuaries might become less productive for popular sport fish and commercial species. Another major industry in South Florida is the boating industry which has tons of demand generated by fishing, scuba, and general ecotourism.
