Ah, apparently its close relative is not the eurasian gooseberry but the cape gooseberry, which is the same genus as the tomatillo.

Cape gooseberries, like many nightshades, grow in a husk (like a tomatillo).

Frozen vegetables + protein (tofu) + sauce to stir fry (e.g tomatillo).

I always imagined it to taste like some combination of Worcestershire sauce and tomatillo salsa.
