- what's your goal, to learn electronics while making synths, or just to make synths yourself?

Digital hardware and software synths will always sound the same no matter what year you turn them on.

Another vote for Ableton and also a vote to keep far away from hardware synths, drum machines, samplers, etc.

Additionally, modular synths are totally DIY and you build each component, then route them in various ways.

In fact, much of the allure of hardware synths comes from the ability to run patch cables between components...changing the routing could mean changing the entire sound.

When you get used to turning knobs on analog gear, using midi to control complex modern digital synths feels barbaric.

It's not trying too hard to repro the real analogue synths, it has its own character.

I already have it stored locally, but this is very impressive and will come in useful for future synths/devices.

Another thought that occurs to me is that people who work with music equipment (especially usb synths and such) care about latency a lot.

There's a few reasons why I love analog hardware synths: - Hackability: Hardware is the "open-source" of the music world.

It's OT but I can't resist: I recently found out that a selection of these little "synths" have been implemented in the chipsounds VST instrument using its bandlimited oscillators.

In fact, myself and several of my peers have been working on a "no-computers" live set in which the entire set is made up of analog synths and no computers are used on stage, to avoid a central point of failure should anything bad happen.

While I agree that modern tools have some detrimental effect on the quality of music* (mainly the loss of character/feeling /"soul" because it's much harder to be expressive like a live musician when all you have is a sequencer and some synths or samples), I think there's other reason of dumbing down of pop.
