Argument is often made, for example by Stroustrup himself, that while language is getting more complicated, using it is getting easier and more intuitive.

If you are new, I would start with university lectures (many esteemed schools teach C++ intro classes) and move onto the Stroustrup book which will get more into the implementations of STL algorithms and data structures.

Taking the "will this break stuff?" worry to the logical extreme would mean that gcc should default to a pre-standarization K&R dialect and g++ to a cfront dialect contemporary with 1st edition Stroustrup.

When I see the never end complaints about object-oriented programming, I'm reminded of Bjarne Stroustrup's quote "There are only two kinds of languages: the ones people complain about and the ones nobody uses." I think that applies equally well to software design concepts.
