You can also get rid of this overhead by using an editor with an integrated repl (emacs+nrepl.el/slime/inferior-lisp-mode, vim+slimv/fireplace, LightTable all do this).

I tried using slimv as well some time ago but I never managed to get it working properly.

If you do like vim, slimv is a really great option for lisping.

But once I got slimv up and running, I felt like I didn't need to learn emacs+slime.

No, I was learning Vim at the exact same time, so ended up using Slimv (vim equivalent of Slime).

I find evil to be closer to vim than slimv is to a good slime experience, but that can change.

Emacs + evil, sure, but please don't forget vim + slimv.

Plus I didn't want most of the plugins that slimv added (paredit for instance).

For vim users, the two choices are vim+slimv and emacs+evil.

Yep, I'm using the `slimv` plugin for vim and the `swank` server in a running `sbcl` instance in a second terminal tab.

I use vim with "vim-slime", which is different than "slimv".

Nvi as the uberfast vi clone with Unicode support, and vim for Common Lisp with Slimv.

Slimv work pretty fine for that, even with Clojure...
