Did Dennis Ritchie say something that 10 years after Unix, that somehow marketing genius at AT&T decided that it was a good thing?

But I can't locate the story (maybe somebody remembers, was it Ritchie or Thompson?) and don't remember when actually.

Wikipedia lists Dennis Ritchie working for Lucent Technologies (currently) and Bell Labs.

Is the logical extension of this that anyone who's written a standard C library was in violation of Kernighan & Ritchie's copyright?

I learned C from 'Kernighan & Ritchie', where it's never referred to as a function but as a compile-time operator.
