Who think a drowning person can just "swim harder" because they need to believe they will be able to if they ever get caught in a riptide. This is soul crushing...

It's better to miss out on some of the last waves in a bubble than to get caught in the monster riptide when the crash comes. Edit: if you do get caught in the crash, do this: If you can't convert to USD/EUR/etc.

It’s a shame that you’ve been caught up in the riptide, through no particular fault of your own, but this was inevitable. A whole industry can’t dick over the world’s population without blowback.

And there's an additional risk attached to offering a free trial and ending up with a riptide of unprofitable customers. Of course, not having a free trial could also have a non-zero cost.

You can't shed responsibility when they come for your unprotected data anymore than you can blame the water if you swim out in the deep alone and get caught in a riptide.

That's not to say I'm complaining: but it's also how it goes, and people who don't understand the structure of the publishing industry or the forces acting on it might find some very unpleasant surprises as they wade into the riptide. One nice thing about Greenspun's comments about writing is that they're realistic and readily accessible.
