It is possible that Western mathematics copied the Arabic notation (with right-to-left numbers), without also copying the correct way to read it (also right-to-left).

You can do google-images-style layouts (right-to-left, fixed height, variable width) but pinterest-style (right-to-left, variable height, fixed width) is impossible and requires (slow) javascript.
