I need the advanced search pane. It's still not there.

That is roughly the same STC rating as a decent dual pane window.

I like the "ideas pane" a lot. I have exactly the same workflow, except my "ideas pane" is just a text file in Dropbox.

Even the dark theme has a bright white message pane for no reason. It also runs very sluggishly compared to the old UI, not sure why.

Mine, for example, fires up six panes in my preferred layout, and starts up a particular part of our project in each pane.

Everything in the Windows Explorer pane is on equal footing. The out of focus windows would get old pretty quickly too.

Search+'s effect on the results page is peripheral, manifesting on the right pane and search suggestions, the main results are largely the same and there is a handy toggle to switch modes. Their browser is opensource, NaCl is opensource, Dart is opensource, the Microsoft stuff never was opensource.

Now, each release of the Mac OS is another step in the transition to iOS. Why improve that ridiculous "Finder" with a dual pane view for organizing your files when you can go the other way and eliminate access to files and folders altogether, like iOS? You never did understand "folders" anyway, did you?

The Chrome app lives in a button on the top bar for easy access, the Android app stays in the notification pane and shows what you should be doing next, and it has this feature called Moment where it runs you through your pending tasks once a day, and you mark them as done, to do today, or to do later. Great way to make sure you keep visibility on stuff.

On Windows and Mozilla's Thunderbird, all of which offer myriad options to customize the appearance and behavior of message list, message pane and folder lists, though the first two apps much more so than Thunderbird. You also get to modify things like toolbars much more freely, and OS/toolkit theming usually also beats the GMail theming system.

Likewise for the opposite - with a device the size of the iPad, it makes sense to have multiple panes and popovers such as in the Mail application. If that were on a device the size of the iPhone, it would be simply unusable. So things formatted for one device wouldn't work on the other and vice versa. So, on a device in between those 2 primary form factors Apple has chosen, which approach makes the most sense? I would posit that neither really works. The iPhone's "take up the whole screen with a single thing" seems too large and the iPad's "multiple pane" approach would likely not be usable on a smaller device.

Single pane windows are standard, there is no central heating and walls are hollow and very thin. I can literally hear my neighbor taking a shower every night, and don't get me started on being able to hear passersby on the street all night long, despite the fact that I live pretty high up. This is an absolutely amazing 1st world country with 3rd world construction practices. I blame it on several factors: 1. Cheap and scammy construction companies that try to maximize their profit margin by using cheap materials and poor building practices. 2. People who don't know any better. Most Japanese people assume that what they get is standard and fair. 3. The pervasive Japanese mindset that everything is disposable, replaceable and ephemeral.
