I don't mind general irreverence towards any kind of law in general, but discounting state/city laws while taking your own rules extremely seriously seems to express a certain disrespect towards the population at large, as if saying " their laws don't matter but ours do because unlike theirs, our rules are logical because they're made by smart people; theirs are stupid or irrelevant relics".

My understanding of the complimentary copy marketplace is its informal, "here's this nice news release of ours, now you wouldn't want us to pull our ad budget, would you, so you know what to do." I'm not aware of any journalistic experiment where readers get to select between ads and complimentary copy.
