Flat has always been about ornamentation and not layers.

The designer / minimalist half of me eschews ornamentation I'm a big fan of the "swiss style".

Is there a real controversy over whether the Harappan script is writing vs. "a kind of ornamentation"?

Are you referring to the relatively recent industrial uses of gold and diamonds, or are you counting ornamentation as intrinsic value?

It's a rejection of ornamentation and unnecessary elements.
