If you want a Unix netbook, get one and install Linux, *BSD or OpenSolaris and get done with it.

It doesn't take anti-Oracle bias to reflect upon OpenSolaris and other direct assaults on open source undertaken by the company.

The illumos project was created as a derivative of opensolaris which was created by Sun.

That system is called Docker (and runs on Linux, obviously) OpenSolaris is all but dead, but a community succeeded it, called IllumOS.

After oracle went closed again many assumed opensolaris died, but in fact a lot of interesting systems development is happening in illumos land.

The last "release" of OpenSolaris was June 2009.

For OpenSolaris derived products with ipkg, the documentation says that "pkg update" in the global zone will update not only the global zone but all non-global zones as well.

As of now, only the OpenSolaris "betas" allow you to boot from a ZFS volume - all the "officially blessed" Solaris releases still require the older UFS filesystem as a boot volume.
