Jeff Hawkins takes the position that only Numenta sees the human brain as a temporal prediction engine based on sparse, hierarchical memory.

So we have quality publications and algorithms from Microsoft or Google and quality marketing from Numenta or cortical.io.

And the work Numenta has contributed on Sparse Codings shouldn't be overlooked.

There are also parallels here with the Numenta Sparse Distributed Representations [2].

A cynical view on this could be the following: Numenta sells licenses, cortical.io sells api requests, they benefit from more developers using their tools.

The problem with cortical.io or numenta (both commercial companies) is that they don't compare their approaches with existing approaches and don't evaluate them on public datasets.

Are there any objective reviews of the Numenta HTM stuff?

I interned at Numenta and he was aking me some ML questions.

I'm not very familiar with Numenta or Hawkins, so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt, however, I think there are two important things to consider.

My impression is that this headline was made to sound like Numenta is a step on the way to the singularity, when it fact it's one of many companies working on machine learning techniques, the key difference being the founders have good resumes.

For example, I was considering posting something about "numenta.org" since to me it's really interesting.

Re: "The most exciting aspect of Numenta's research is that they are building algorithms which think the way we do (albeit in early stages right now)." It is a stretch to use the word "think" in this way, since thinking suggests consciousness.

Sounds similar to Numenta's Grok SaaS offering machine learning and pattern recognition on streams of data[1].

I see a lot of patents for HTM, but have there been any peer reviewed publications from Numenta?

Numenta's based upon the hierarchical temporal memory model described in the book On Intelligence.
