It's an idea tried and failed many times over (GPU hosted games in the cloud, OnLive, GaiKai, etc).

Sony even has an division named Gaikai centered around doing this (which is where those patents are probably wanted).

Both OnLive and Gaikai were doing this around 2008 and nobody seemed to give a shit.

This is how it could be accomplished prior to Sony's acquisition of Gaikai and OnLive.

Haven't you heard about Gaikai (now owned by Sony) that provided cloud-based gaming.

I tried some Gaikai demos before they were acquired and to my surprise it worked very well.

I imagine many of them were running virtualized Windows machines, as Gaikai and OnLive didn't start out as console streamers.

OnLive had five datacenters in North America, Gaikai ran on… 300?

People had similar concerns about cloud gaming, but OnLive (which, note, also came from Rearden Labs) and Gaikai proved it could be done surprisingly well.

Its quite contrary to the approach onLive and Gaikai have been taking with streaming games from the cloud to any device that is able to output a video stream.

OnLive and Gaikai were the big two that I remember.

Brendan Iribe has been working in the Computer graphics/games industry for ages, co-founding Scaleform (video game UI system) and then working as chief product officer for Gaikai (really impressive video game streaming technology).

So, assuming that certain details might have been changed "to protect the identities of those involved," it may in fact have been Gaikai, a video-game streaming startup acquired by Sony for 380 million in 2012.

Gaikai was acquired by Sony, and OnLive failed and parts of it were also sold off to Sony.

Still on the other hand things like Onlive/Gaikai realtime game streaming are really quite impressive and responsive.

Although, once the PSN Cloud (Gaikai) launches it should have the entire PS catalog at your disposal.
