How about finger-printing the hell out of it with nmap until you arrive at a ballpark?

Protocol-specific tools may be the better tool here: nmap port queries, swaks, etc.

This is definitely a possibility, and when sourceforge bundles nmap with malware I would deem it nessesary.

Its pretty neat that the one you found disabled nmap (zenmap?).

I wonder how many copies of nmap are running against Sourceforge's servers right now?

From this I was able to compile nmap and other tools I needed.

It's excellent that the nmap people distribute gpg sigs.

I find it especially interesting that nmap was used in a porn movie of some sort (at work, so I can't verify/see how graphic it is).

Luckily we all switched to nmap's `ncat` utility.

I feel bad for them really as this will hurt the NMap brand, but come on, avoid the whole situation and just remove the project from SourceForge completely.

When you're looking at a range of ports used to open a connection between layer 7 and, due to the pre-negotiated encryption basically layer 3, netcat, nmap, and tcpdump aren't as informative as they were before.

Nmap had a Sourceforge account, but now it's been taken away from them -- "hijacked", as the post describes it.

The submission was accepted on Slashdot [1] but with several modifications that changes "Fyodor accuses Sourceforge of hijacking nmap account" to "Fyodor warns that he doesn't control Sourceforge nmap mirror", among other things.
