While this is a hot button topic, I've seen some pretty horrible things Monsanto has done to farmers.

Accepting GMO crops would mean accepting Monsanto who has a monopoly on the industry and are well know for using sketchy tactics when dealing with farmers resistant to using their seeds.

I doubt this research would be funded by Monsanto or other companies which sell artificial fertilizer.

So I speak from intimate experience at a big school, with someone who had just left Monsanto and moved to academia.

I'm now imagining the Monsanto approach getting more and more constrained at each stage.

Ah okay good, I'm mostly just responding to the folks who think GMOs are bad because of how Monsanto abuses intellectual property rights surrounding them.

I think of the dolts who vote for EA as "Worst Company" when EA is nothing like Comcast or Time Warner Cable or even Seaworld or Monsanto.

"Cultivation ease" is a basket of traits, ripening all at once (terrible for taste and nutrition), plant height, disease/pest resistance, pesticide tolerance (Monsanto's world famous "roundup ready" crops) etc.

I read another interesting post by someone else (I think it was the Monsanto guy), who said "Don't filter people out at the phone interview stage, unless they really fail the phone interview." His reasoning is that you're selecting for people who sound good over the phone.

It seems the risk for Europe would be giving control of their agriculture to a non-EU corporation like Monsanto.

So the the problem GMO solves isn't making more food - it's making more money for Monsanto.
