They are still running the Lycos search engine and are slowly transitioning all their B2C products under Lycos brand.

They'd better be, trying to make a name in this space against Excite and Lycos and Yahoo.

Way back in the past, Lycos came out of CMU (a multi-billion $ exit back in the old days).

If accessing Google cost you money while lycos/yahoo/altavista were free, nobody would have ever tried Google.

Is there absolutely no chance that even 90's era Lycos could ruin this search?

I don't know how it helps as Lycos died in the west and nobody knew about it in India.

Figured Lycos is trying to do something cool for their come back.

A place where a tiny company like Google was able to sell their service because it was on the same playing field as lycos/yahoo/altavista.

I remembered Lycos just recently after I discovered their headquarters driving home one evening.

I would think that using the name Lycos would hurt the company.

I used to prefer Lycos as my search engine until one day I tried Google back in 1998 or so and never went back.

Yahoo, Excite, AllTheWeb, HotBot, Lycos etc were all search engines before Google.

First reaction I had, too: "Lycos is still around?".

I.e., altavista, yahoo, ask.com, msn, lycos, infoseek, etc".

Something this got me thinking though; what about other less popular search engines such as Lycos, do they ALL track usage?

All those little guys, such as Lycos, InfoSeek, and DuckDuckGo are modestly profitable.

You just have to focus on becoming the Google to their Lycos.
