But back to pinyin, that was intended as an alphabetic alternative for native Chinese speakers to use instead of logographs/characters.

A prominent example would be 觉, pronounced jué in 觉得 but jiào in 睡觉 Hanzi are logographs, not a syllabary.

Kanji are logographs, where one character represents one entire word or concept rather than sounds.

Once you've got a few logographs, it becomes apparent immediately that you can't extend that approach to everything you can say.

The point is that if they really were logographs, and not just a complicated syllabary, you would get a lot more than the equivalent of two or three letters out of them.

So I guess the real answer here is that the Egyptian writing system incorporates elements of alphabets and logographs, used together.

There are true logographs (休，林，森), true phonosemantic compounds, and plenty purely phonetic characters that have no meaning by themselves ("bound morphemes").

I spent years in Taiwan studying traditional Chinese and even at the height of my proficiency there were plenty of rarer logographs that I'd frequently stumble over - only able to draw "blurry approximations" of them depending on my familiarity.
