My previous company contracted with Galye Laakmann McDowell to coach the engineers before an acquisition due diligence.

The questions are indeed puzzles; that's why Gayle Laakmann and others have made a living publishing books of the questions themselves.

I think its helpful to look at the specific facts of this situation to understand the frustration Gayle Laakmann McDowell experiences.

That last bit is particularly obnoxious because people monetize their insider knowledge either through things like Rooftop Slushie or they take a more Gayle Laakmann angle.

Gayle Laakmann McDowell is a woman by the way.

It is not mine (Gayle Laakmann McDowell).

I'm more apt to believe that Gayle Laakmann McDowell has a slightly skewed viewpoint of being taken as a recruiter more often than the average female engineer.

I'd suggest getting the big green coding interview book (Cracking the Coding Interview by Gayle Laakmann McDowell) and brush up on basic algorithms, data structures and general CS-speak.

I highly recommend this book, I find her step by step approach really insightful, and the book covers a crazy amount of material (it's a big book - Gayle Laakmann Mcdowell is a friggin machine).

People like Gayle Laakmann are helpful (especially when Facebook gives candidates a live hour-long session with her for free), but these people are ultimately invested in their own income and not the task of fundamentally fixing this broken process.

Gayle Laakmann McDowell, who wrote "Cracking the Coding Interview", wrote an insightful post her blog about this.

And Gayle Laakmann, author of "Cracking the Coding Interview" actually says it's important to write nearly perfect code at the whiteboard.
