I did this earlier this year with a 1911-style Martini recipe (from the Knickerbocker Hotel in NYC) and could tell the difference.

The panic really didn't kick off until Knickerbocker crumpled...

$3 in 1929 = $55.18 in 2024 sure, thats on the lowend for a hotel these days, but i doubt that hotel knickerbocker was giving their best rooms for $3.

Obviously the WTC has nothing to do with the problem of concrete deterioration, but neither did any of the other big collapses that Surfside is likely to surpass (Pemberton Mill, Knickerbocker Theater, Hyatt Regency, etc).

I tend to follow the Knickerbocker Hotel 1911 recipe for classic Martinis, which I make often but a well mixed Vesper is an incredible drink, and something most of the people here are unlikely to have tried.

Cinemax's excellent 'The Knick' (about a chief surgeon at the Knickerbocker Hospital in 1900's New York) had a gut-wrenching one or two episode arc about efforts to refine transfusion techniques and why the team kept seemingly randomly ending up w/dead patients because no one had yet understood Rhesus factor proteins.

(I say this as a short white dude living in what was, up until about 5 years ago, the most dangerous neighborhood in Brooklyn - and about 3 blocks away from a stretch along Knickerbocker Ave that, similarly up until about 5 years ago, had the highest murder rate in the city..

That said there there have been some buildings that collapsed via snow (Knickerbocker Theater in 1922) or like the Millennium tower cause of groundwork issues (Transcona Grain Elevator in 1913).
