illumos-based

Solaris (and by extension illumos-based operating systems) solve that problem with the pNFS protocol.

I know there are several illumos-based distributions, so I'd like some clarification on the do's and don'ts.

So if you clicked in expecting the illumos-based virtualization platform, this isn't that.

One option could be to run illumos-based system if you need linux compatibility.

They let you natively execute Linux binaries on any IllumOS-based operating system.

Most illumos-based operating systems (like OpenIndiana and SmartOS) will likely be more receptive to Let's Encrypt, though their desktop significance is also pretty low.

Or if you'd prefer not to contribute to linux monoculturalization, FreeBSD is available in addition to the other BSD variants and even illumos-based systems.

It's there, it works, it's in shipping illumos-based products (from Joyent and others) and it's supported by those who ship it or stand it up.

My first immutable distro was Illumos-based SmartOS.

Not to mention illumos-based systems too.

The reason I don't want a FreeBSD or Illumos-based OS as a media center is because of no Netflix streaming support, and Flash performance is poor too.

The Open Source community that had sprung up around Solaris during the early OpenSolaris years has fled to Illumos-based distributions (or to Linux or the BSDs, I guess; they certainly aren't working on Solaris, anymore), none of which have the resources to even compete with a modern Linux or even the BSDs in terms of number of people working on making it nice, modern, and easy to deploy.

Tribblix, on the other hand, is also an illumos-based distro but is based on Solaris 10 (and prior’s) SVR4 packaging which is managed via a utility called “zap”.

I personally am a "recent" convert, inasmuch as I had limited exposure to Solaris, and did not make the jump to it (or rather Illumos-based) being a preferred distribution until the days of SmartOS and OmniOS.
