It's like when you install a copy of Debian and look for Firefox, but instead see something called Iceweasel - I assume that still happens?

In the case of Debian, it tells them you are using a specific version of iceweasel, which probably is quite deterministic in combination with the rest of the dragnet.

I need all of those things to look exactly the same in each and every browser, instead of corrupted icons or broken navigation because the developer tested it in Chrome for Windows but neglected, say, Iceweasel for Debian.

Whereas Iceweasel is the "free as in freedom" version of Firefox, perhaps the Chromium fork should be a called Dullium.

In that case why would it make a request with "key=no-google-api-key" then why not use the IceWeasel key right from the start?

Iceweasel actually has a file somewhere in /etc that overrides the config to disable some of those features.

Take Firefox for instance - if you don't like/trust Iceweasel, you can just install FF to /opt/ and trust Mozilla for upgrades.
