You're spot on about how we say "an herb" in the US. Interestingly, it seems "hotel" is the exact opposite... I've never heard someone in the US drop the "h" .

The car factory doesn't weld closed the bonnet of its vehicles and the farmer doesn't whine about lost profits because I dare to have a herb garden in my back yard.

The term "media industry" is not usually applied to "crowdsourced low budget SF epics from Finland and state-subsidized art films from France", any more than the term "agricultural industry" would be applied to someone's backyard herb garden. The OP did not claim that "movies are dying", he claimed that the media industry is dying, which is a completely different statement.
