I have two Time Machine HDDs (An Internal + an External), which counts for two of my six HDDs.

Also the noise of the HDDs is killing me.

Their performance special source is using the minimum amount of flash to provide a performance boost over standard HDDs.

Although at some point they'll probably just make many many fewer HDDs so the price will stop moving much.

If SSDs continue their price decline and capacity increases as this article mentions, it'd be difficult for HDDs to compete.

And in the meantimg HDDs would have gotten cheaper; so expect even more time for parity.

At that point in time, there was an 8:1 price/GB differential between the 512 GB SSDs and the 500 GB HDDs.

SSDs get you cheap storage and lower power consumption, negating both tape and HDDs simultaneously.

Low cost is all relative, and even SSDs are still pretty costly when you need several TB of storage compared to HDDs.

Although I do agree that HDDs are currently substantially cheaper than SSDs, HDDs have had much less drop in price or increase in capacity compared to the pre flood era.

TL;DR SSD advancement set to deprecate HDDs and tape in near future.

And judging from the reliability figures I'm hearing, it's more like a 1/10 multiplier and SSDs already outpace HDDs in value.

So it remains in their best interest to keep the prices high [2]." It's not in the HDD manufacturers best interest to keep prices inflated, considering price is one of the 2 big competitive edge HDDs have over SSDs.

There are superior aspects to the design of "enterprise" hardware (or rather, rack mounted server hardware) that have been mentioned by others: ECC RAM, redundant PSUs and HDDs, motherboard designs that (hopefully) are laid out for ideal airflow, etc.
