You should write a gonzo-style programming epic. It reminds me that some of what we do might as well be magic to the people that hire us and unlike in past cultures where we'd be anointed as medicine men and revered as holy, we're given gilt boxes by monkeys.

I don't disagree that it's tacky, and have a low opinion of gonzo journalism in general. However, the rise of personal reporting brands is bigger than one person or evne one publication.

It's interesting how the same underlying mistake manifests itself in different cultures: Perl 6 was "we'll break all your code, but give you gonzo new features that we hope are useful." Python 3 was "we'll break all your code, but soothe some pedants and browbeat you into accepting the result."

What you're saying may be true of new media sites and investigative / gonzo / entertainment journalism, but old school journalism 101 says the first paragraph should be a summary for hard news stories. In fact, hard news should be written such that you can chop off paragraphs in reverse order and still have a sensible article.

If you like Thompson's writing or ideas, or would like to observe more of the "gonzo" character, then in addition to the writings check out a 1978 BBC mini-documentary "Fear and loathing in gonzo-vision". A journalist and cameraperson go around with HST for a few days, there are casual interviews, some on-the-scene scenes and some background.

Likewise, if gonzo porn had interstitials about how copying is wrong, I doubt anyone would be moved by it, but if political feminist porn had little interludes where the director said she didn't make much off her work and would rather you support her, it would almost certainly be effective. People who are religious will happily do a whole number of viciously amoral things, like go to war, kill people, or make others feel subhuman for their gender or sex preferences.
