I kind of think that Gitter is a joke and I'm not convinced they can do better than Slack.

As far as I can tell Gitter is owning the space for open source projects, so there are definitely niches here.

I (and many others) keep up with Gitter rooms and IRC channels (Freenode, mostly) by bridging them to Slack or Kato with sameroom.io.

As I chat with one of the founders, If I had to describe the service I would write something like: "kwak.io: a discussion-based (channels), real-time (chat) platform (server)" which forme it sounds like: server + chat + channels === 'IRC' Nowdays we have plenty of modern alternatives to good-old IRC: Slack, Gitter, Hipchat.

With Gitter, you can be on multiple projects at once in one client UI.

You could have just written a post extolling the benefits of Gitter, and gone about your day of adding more campers to your project.
