If you spend most of your wealth on large gas-guzzling cars and alcohol, your overall tax rate will be high.

Tesla is certainly innovative, but these restrictions have nothing to do with that innovation; gas-guzzling SUVs cannot be sold direct-to-consumer either.

Heck, I'd much rather have cars, with their noise and pollution and gas-guzzling, than horses with their shit.

If Tesla just sold batteries and a powertrain to Detroit, it wouldn't fix the public perception of American cars as gas-guzzling clunkers at all.

It's kind of like how gas-guzzling, environment-ruining automobiles in general are crappy, but what practical alternatives exist that actually cover all of the use cases?

Why not make up for the (arguably inconsequential) loss in revenue by making the people with the less desirable behavior (purchasing gas-guzzling, polluting vehicles) subsidize the desirable behavior?

Sure, everyone who drives a car is an earth-destroying, gas-guzzling, roided out freak who's trying to kill you, but isn't that all the more reason to have some respect for everyone else on the road?

Likewise, if I buy a gas-guzzling SUV, which churns out black smoke to all my neighbours around - I only pay for the gas - but it's those around me that also suffer.

As much as I'm a public transportation advocate (I don't own a car, and refuse car rides if a public transportation option is available for the place I need to get to), it's becoming increasingly more difficult to promote this kind of lifestyle with the advent of Uber and other things that have made private gas-guzzling cars even more convenient than ever before.
