One switched from tech to law, one from tech to forestry, and another is a chef at a restaurant. I've also known people who switched and then switched back because they realized it was more about the money for them than the happiness.

Looking back at its stories, it got involve in power generation, TV manufacture, even forestry. I am sure that this is only part of its evolution.

I went with a friend a few years back, to get a helicopter ride with someone he did consulting with in the forestry industry. He told me about how the people he worked for expensed a helicopter to go for coffee sometimes...

Turns out that a first in urban forestry management counts for more with most employers, because HR witches don't actually understand the skills they're supposed to be assessing, and therefore just get told "throw everything that's not a 1st in the bin". Which is a despicable waste of talent, and why I therefore do not give two hoots what you studied or where, if at all.

Jpg Todays municipalities are shunning urban forestry for miserly xeroscape landscaping. "Native landscaping" is often anything but, and has turned entire neighborhoods and towns into gravel strewn deserts.

It is the economical equivalent of forestry agencies that protected forests from forest fires, when forests naturally managed themselves via fires started by lightning strikes, such that large fires would inevitably start and be uncontrollable. Large bailouts can cause incredibly bad things to happen.

There is an anaology I really enjoy which relates the idea of saving economy and markets from the natural process of failing: "In the 1970s the US developed a policy of forestry that espoused 100% prevention of forest fires; let’s call it “fire is not an option”. This policy resulted in the systemic suppression of small fires and eventually into very unbalanced forest ecosystems where fire is now not just an option, but a certainty of disaster.

Insert forest and trees analogies in that we've got way too many presentations over the decades about how one individual tree needs trimming or fertilizing or bonsai treatment as compared to how our neighbors orchard does the same, but not enough real forestry management presentations.
