You do know that Ericsson is a corporation with over 100,000 employees and hundreds/thousands of products and projects, right?

The same week this spring Sony and Ericsson gave advance notice of upcoming layoffs to 1000 and 2000 people respectively.

Erlang is designed so that programmers at Ericsson could write better code for phone switches, with constant feedback from said programmers.

The main point seems to be that Ericsson made a good switch with it...

Lots of phone in this era were special: Nokia 8210, Ericsson t28s, Motorola v36.

It was banned for new projects in one part of Ericsson in February 1998.

They are a top-tier player in network equipment along with Ericsson and Huawei.

I think my 'phone' experience peaked at the Sony Ericsson M600i, fantastic keyboard on it, nice screen, mp3 and stuff.

An interesting note is that Ericsson only a month later released their very successful ATM switch AXD 301 that was written mostly in Erlang.

I assume he was referring to how a series of popular telephone switches from Ericsson had their software written in Erlang.

The JVM was utter crap though, with no JIT, so everything was 1/10th of the speed of Sony Ericsson phones or Nokia of the same era...

I think we called Blackberry phones and Sony Ericsson phones "smartphones", which existed before iPhones.

The same way that before phones had "app platforms" nobody cared what OS an Ericsson, or a Nokia or a Motorola phone run, and the number of people who worked on them was insignificant (basically employees of said companies).

Regarding naval architects, there's Bushnell's Turtle, Ericsson's Monitor, and Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Great Eastern..

There is also OpenWebRTC[2] by Ericsson, but it doesn't work on Windows.

My mobile phone has one and it's a Sony/Ericsson.
