As someone who has worked extensively with emscripten, and asm.js, something like this is great and needed.

That's not really true -- it's pretty easy to call into an Emscripten module from javascript.

One possibility: what if you used a version of libfreetype or similar, compiled via emscripten, and run it on the client?

I am a firm believer in native code and consider Emscripten and Web Assembly nothing more than fads.

That's an important use case and indeed Emscripten doesn't really support it.

Regarding compiling C using emscripten, I wanted a pure JS implementation so that it was hackable using Chrome Developer tools, E.g.

With the advent of things like NaCl, Emscripten, and WebAssembly these things should not be necessary anymore.

Compile them to Web Assembly first:) People have already run Rust code through Emscripten.

It would be especially useful if we could use the same bindings for Node addons and Emscripten.
