Does not mean the same thing as: You're an idiot:) This is why emoticons are an important part of comments.

It's pretty hard to gauge one's tone/feeling/attitude without having all the hahas, emoticons, smileys, redundant words etc.

The effectiveness of emoticons has been greatly diminished by interfaces that rewrite them as emoji.

Last but not least: Why would I want to get emoticons(?) or voice notes(??) from my mom?

I guess I need to cut down on my use of emoticons in shorter text forms and work on speaking more manly?

I'm also reminded of Perl, a language that grows multi-character operator glyphs at a rate only slightly slower than teenagers invent emoticons.

Emoticons and emoji have traditionally been displayed as yellow cirlces with large faces.

Emoticons have been used in the west since the telegraph and kaomojis (emojis) showed up in the 80s and have been known outside of Japan not long after.
